LUNA

A refreshingly honest and natural artist Luna is completely self taught and uniquely original. Proudly South African of Afrikaans heritage she has a gift for capturing the amazing beauty of the African wildlife along with the stunning scenery of the region. Studying Luna’s portfolio immediately communicates to the viewer a deep love of nature that has been cultivated by having spent her youth on the family’s farm.

Luna picked up her first brush at the tender age of seventeen but didn’t seriously begin her artistic pursuit until 2006. In the same year she entered her first major piece in the EPSAC New Upcoming Artist Exhibition in her home town Port Elizabeth winning the Merit Award for Best New Talent. Since then her artistic career has flourished selling numerous pieces both in South Africa and internationally, gaining quite a reputation in the process.

A tendency towards a lightly textured fine art style has resulted in a large portfolio featuring everything from landscapes, stunning portraits, to close-up studies of wildlife.

Luna is inspired by the everyday beauty that surrounds her. Where exactly she fits into the art world is not of importance to her, as long as her art offers a bit of happiness to people that can associate with it or gives a momentary escape from the busy world we live in she’ll feel she has accomplished her goal.

Having recently travelled to Australia she is now also focusing her considerable talent on our uniquely Australian wildlife and breathtaking outback landscapes and so a new chapter in her artistic career has begun.

DROVERS RUN

Yep, Drover’s Run as in the exact same one from McLeod’s Daughters. Miles and miles away back in South Africa me and my family would be glued to the tellie episode after episode. We laughed with them, we cried with them & was heartbroken when the series came to an end. I grew up on the farm so enjoyed the farm life stories & girls kicking arse. So when I came upon this beautiful photograph of the homestead in such an idyllic setting I just had to paint it. This one is for the cast & all the other "McLeods" fans out there.

FIREWORKS

Referred to as the 'Flower of Blood' by some Koori groups. This name comes from a legend which tells of a young woman who escaped marriage to an elderly man by eloping with her young lover. The shunned man with some of his friends tracked the couple down and killed them both, as well as the relatives with whom they had lived. Sometime later, the old man returned to the place where he had slain the lovers and found the ground covered with the scarlet flowers that we know as the Sturt's Desert pea.

IF LOOKS COULD KILL

Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline. With lions just lying about for 20 hours of the day it’s no wonder they have plenty of time to look after their appearance, because it’s clear to see that with a mere flutter of this lion’s eyelashes she can easily seduce her prey into submission.

STRETCH

A fact well known about giraffes is that on any grassland or savannah this guy stands head & shoulders above the rest, but something less known is that the Bushmen of southern Africa have medicine dances named after some animals. The giraffe dance for instance is performed to treat head ailments. And how the giraffe got its height has been the subject of various African folktales, including one from eastern Africa which explains that the giraffe grew tall from eating too many magic herbs. So lesson for the day slooow down on your magic herb intake! :)
